Mastery Sustaining Work Group 20-21

This project brings together all the Work Groups across the network that are working on helping primary schools to sustain their teaching for mastery (TfM) approach for mathematics. The project is new in 2020/21 and builds on the work carried out in previous TfM focused issues NCPs, but also seeks to establish continuing support for collaborative planning and specialist subject knowledge development in primary schools and leadership within the school.


This Work Group is aimed at schools that have previously engaged with the teaching for mastery program.


This Work Group consists of six sessions over the year, made up of twilights, virtual and face to face sessions. The program will initially focus on supporting maths leads to develop, implement and refine a ‘recovery curriculum’ using the recently published guidance materials from NCETM. Over the course of the year, we will then explore issues pertinent to the leadership of a mastery approach to maths across the school, including effective monitoring and leading professional development. In addition, the Work Group includes the opportunity for class teachers to participate in collaborative planning sessions led by our mastery specialist teachers.


  • All teachers in the participating schools will enhance their mathematics subject knowledge with an emphasis on progression especially within the key areas of mathematics addressed by the Work Group
  • Subject leaders will learn more about how to establish an effective collaborative planning culture for their teachers, which supports ongoing specialist subject knowledge development
  • All school staff understand and value ongoing professional development in order to uphold the cycle of improvement

The ongoing impact of the coronavirus outbreak and knock on effects on schools life remain uncertain. So, all Maths Hubs work will adapt to changing realities. There’s likely to be more live online collaboration, for example. In addition Work Groups content will address both schools recovery from coronavirus related disruption and the central maths subject matter of each project.
