Specialist knowledge for Teaching Mathematics Primary
June 29 @ 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm
Want to become a more effective and knowledgeable practitioner?
There’s more to subject knowledge than knowing how to do the maths yourself. Teachers and teaching assistants need to have a clear understanding of how children grasp and retain mathematical concepts. This year, Maths Hubs are running Work Groups in this area for EY practitioners, primary teachers and TAs in primary schools.
Teachers who want to develop their subject knowledge and pedagogy in maths teaching can take part in our Subject Knowledge for Teaching Mathematics (SKTM) programme. Participants will access newly-developed resources and benefit from expert input in the hope that they will develop as outstanding maths teachers who will champion the subject in their own school.
The programme will run over three full-day sessions and will look at the progression of number from FS through to Year 6 so that all participants gain an understanding of the design, structure and sequence of an effective maths curriculum, regardless of the year group they are currently based in. Between each full-day session, there will be a gap task set that will encourage participants to evaluate their choices about content and sequencing to support effective learning in their own classroom.

The ongoing impact of the corona virus outbreak and knock on effects on schools life remain uncertain. So, all Maths Hubs work will adapt to changing realities. There’s likely to be more live online collaboration, for example. In addition Work Groups content will address both schools recovery from corona virus related disruption and the central maths subject matter of each project.
